I have been accepted to the Utah County Master Gardener program starting in October. I’ll be taking a class twice a week until December and then doing 40 hours of community work in the next year to earn the certificate. I’m excited about this! I’ll be writing more about what I learn in the class in the coming months. I’m looking forward to increasing my knowledge about garden care, diagnosing and treating plant problems, and hopefully there will be some element of garden design involved, although I’m not sure there will be.
Maybe as part of my community service for this, I can create a website for the Utah County program, because they really don’t have any info one can readily find online.
Thanks for the info. I guess I got lucky because they still had some openings in the evening class. Every once and a while procrastinators like me get lucky.
Keep up the blogging. It’s great to read about what others are doing in their yards.
Hey Jon,
I’m glad you’re still reading the blog, because it’s been a little less active this year than usual (because I’m spending so much time working on my basement this year and less in the garden).
Anyway, I have read that these programs are hard to get into and in some other counties, people have to get in line in the wee hours of the morning to enroll. I think the class quickly fills up here in Utah County, too, but I had called them last winter, and they put me on an advanced notice list. They sent letters to everyone on that list before they opened registration up to the general public (I don’t know how long the lead time was). The letter came while I was on vacation, and so I didn’t get my application sent in until a week-and-a-half after it was postmarked, so I was worried I may have been too late. But it turns out I was good.
The person I spoke with at the Utah County Extension service (which runs the master gardener program) was Trish and the phone number is 851-8479.
Steve,
I was actually thinking of joining the master gardener program in utah county. Maybe I am too late for this year, but do you have info on who you contact to enroll?
