I’ve had a few friends ask about timing for planting vegetable gardens along the Wasatch Front. The traditional rule of thumb is to wait until Mothers’ Day weekend, and that looks true this year. After the snowstorm last weekend, I was not sure Mothers’ Day would hold up as the right time this year, but the forecast now looks excellent. So, go ahead, plant your tomatoes, corn, squash, beans, and all that good stuff! Bring on the summer! :)
Hi Kim, by all means go ahead and plant. They might be just a tad late, but we generally have a decent growing season till early to mid-October, so there’s still plenty of time for veggies to produce. Have the little plants been out in the sun much yet? If not, you need to harden them off for a few days by giving them part sun/part shade, like putting a laundry basket upside down over them to give filtered sunlight. Then give them a full day of sun and make sure they handle it well before planting. Keep them adequately watered during this hardening process, since they can dry up fast when not in the ground. Good luck, and definitely get them in the ground quick before temps get too hot and make it tougher.
I’m new to gardening, I’ve held off from transplanting my plants into my garden because of the crazy weather we’ve been having here in Utah. It’s now the first week of June and now I’m a little worried I’ve waited to long, most of my plants are within 2-3 inches in height, do you still think I’ll have produce this year?
