I don’t know if I’ve ever seen snowflakes as big as the ones that fell today. My son and I were sick and at home while the rest of the family was at church. I looked out the back window, and noticed that the flakes were almost two inches across! I got out the camera and snapped these photos.
This evening, I did a little online search for big snowflakes and found this interesting article in the New York Times. Wow! Snowflakes as big as frisbees? It’s evidently possible, though no one has photographed one.
Maureen,
When I got my place, it was just a half acre of dirt. No trees, no yard, no nothin’. We had some ideas of what to do, but what really got us committed was hiring a landscape designer. He was a young guy working on a degree in landscape architecture who worked for a local nursery. Because he wasn’t a full-fledged “architect” he didn’t cost too much (he was about $400). And it was well worth it to get some ideas for the hardscape (some rock retaining walls, the patio, etc.) as well as how to lay out the lawn, flowerbeds, shrub beds, veggie garden area, and all that. He proposed lists of plants and we looked at photos of them, and then we changed some things and finalized it. Having a list of plants to buy and a drawing of where to put them really helped a lot.
I have been following your postings for the last year, I’m in a suburb of Pittsburgh. I recently ready about the guerrilla gardening and I laughing about planting “under the cover of darkness.” What I want to know is, how on earth did you half acre get started? I am somewhat daunted because I dug out all of my overgrown shrubs around the house and now I am absolutely frightened to begin!
if I ever get a photo of one, I will send you a copy… don’t hold your breath.
